New Year’s Eve we went to our early movie with Jayne, then for a light dinner. It was after 8:00 when the movie ended, and most eating places were closed. We did find one open and finished dinner a little after 9:00. I took Jayne home and when we arrived at our house, the first thing Ken asked was, “Are you going to cook dinner?” Reminding him that we just finished was to no avail and to escape an argument, I turned on the TV for him and came into the office. When I peeked into the kitchen, thinking he would be sleepy and settled in the family room, as I had given him two Tylenol PM, he was busy ransacking the refrigerator. Finding cheese and bread and some Ready Whip, I let him be. We finally went to bed at 1:30 p.m. I really hadn’t wanted to stay up and watch the New Year arrive, but we did. I just can’t seem to sleep until he is settled.
All of our married life he has set aside New Year’s Day as his day. A lover of football, no matter who is playing, he could (and did) watch game after game, rooting and cheering for his favorite college team. By day’s end he was exhausted, having physically gone through all the motions of running, kicking and tackling throughout every game. Personally, I was always a little annoyed at his devotion to the great god football. Now I would be delighted if he would sit and watch. I turned on the TV this morning and reminded him of how much he would enjoy the games. He does watch for a while, but loses track of what’s going on every time there’s a commercial and he shows no enthusiasm whatsoever. When I remind him to watch he often tells me, “They’re just doing a rerun of yesterday’s game.” If he were capable of understanding I would say, “That’s what I’ve been telling you for more than a half century.” I know, sarcastic humor is wasted on children — and on AD victims.
All in all, it’s been a good day: mostly Ken with a touch of Buddy straightening up and putting things away. Tomorrow will be a search and rescue day for lost items.
